Security Camera System for Home

Understanding the Different Types of Security Camera Systems for Home

There are two core categories of a security camera system for the home: outdoor and indoor. In these categories are various subcategories of the best security camera system for home-like wireless and wired AC-powered and battery-powered, and doorbell and floodlight cameras.

The key difference between outdoor and indoor cameras is that outdoor cameras are weather-resistant, meaning they can withstand dust, sun, and rain. Outdoor cameras come with a protective cover on the lens and casting that lasts many years, making them costlier than indoor security cameras. Let’s discuss outdoor and indoor security camera systems for homes you can buy.

Wired Indoor Cameras

The best indoor security camera system for home is connected to the central recording unit by Ethernet or coaxial cable. They are usually dome cameras that can be fixed on ceilings to provide a broad view inside a home. They require professional installation.

Wired Outdoor Cameras

Wired outdoor camera systems are connected to the central recording unit by a wire. They are usually bullet-style cameras, the name emanating from their long cylindrical shape. You can mount them on ceilings or walls, and you don’t have to plug them into an outlet. Many wired cameras available can be used indoors and outdoors, and you need the services of a professional to install them.

Wireless Indoor Security Camera System for Home

Also referred to as IP or WiFi cameras, wireless indoor security cameras link to a WiFi network and keep their footage in the cloud. Installing them is easy because they don’t require a cable to transmit video feed. However, you will need to plug them in power. There are various unique indoor cameras, including those that hand out treats to your cat or dog and baby cams that record humidity, temperature, and air quality in a baby’s room.

Wireless Outdoor Cameras

Wireless outdoor security camera systems for homes are similar to indoor cameras. However, they are bigger and water-resistant. They should be mounted to a structure or wall using mounting screws and plates. Some cameras come with an inbuilt siren and spotlight to scare away intruders. They usually have a broad field view and cover a wider area than many wired bullet cameras.

Floodlight Cameras

These are outdoor wireless cameras with a large floodlight that turns on when the camera does. This helps them capture clearer video and potentially scare away intruders. They can be hardwired to existing lighting wires or powered by an outlet.

Wire-Free Outdoor Cameras

Wire-free security system for the home is battery-powered wireless cameras. You don’t have to plug them into a power outlet. They usually record once they detect motion and are easy to install. Wire-free cameras usually have similar features as wireless cameras, but they can record continuously because of battery power limitations. Some wire-free cameras allow users to attach a solar panel to ensure the batteries are always charged.

Video Doorbells

Video doorbells are popular outdoor security cameras that replace the standard doorbell with one that features a camera inside. Once the doorbell is pressed or detects motion, it starts recording and launches two-way audio on your smart TV, smartphone, or smart speaker.

That way, you can view and talk to the person at your front door, who can hear but not see you. Many video doorbells should be hardwired into your current doorbell wiring, which can be a simple do-it-yourself project. There are various battery-powered options available.

Should You Buy Outdoor or Indoor Security Camera System for Home?

The type of security camera you purchase depends on the areas you want to secure. Outdoor cameras are meant for security purposes, featuring many deterrent inbuilt features like sirens and lights with motion detection. Further, two-way audio allows users to remotely talk to the individual within your property.

If you can prevent intruders from entering your property using outdoor cameras, you may not need indoor security cameras. However, if you are looking for the ultimate home security system, you need outdoor and indoor cameras. These will increase your chances of capturing potential problems on camera regardless of where it occurs.

If you are working on a budget, security experts may recommend starting with indoor cameras located in central areas like the key entrance points, isolated locations like a basement with a walkout exit, and windows and entry points. The security camera system for a home you choose should be motion activated and capable of discharging an alert to your security company, or smartphone upon a trigger

The security camera should also record to a cloud-based server. In this case, the footage will be accessible and safe should an intruder disable the camera.

Finally

Outdoor security cameras are ideal for you if you are concerned about privacy. You can also position indoor cameras in areas that capture general traffic, like the back door or hallway. An indoor camera is an excellent option if you are looking for a device that will help you monitor your pet or communicate with your loved ones while you are away.
