IoT Home Sensors for Home Automation

IoT Home Sensors

Essential IoT Home Sensors for Smart Home Automation

The advancement of the Internet allowed a platform for fast and efficient communication. The internet made the world smaller by allowing people to communicate. This is despite the miles of sea and land that are in between these people. Now, IoT home sensors have benefited from this advancement as well.

The Internet also sparked the advancement of the smart home. Strong Internet-based communication has now replaced weak protocols in connecting devices. This allowed for the rise of wifi smart home sensors and the Internet of Things or IoT.

IoT Smart Sensors for Smart Home Automatio

Here are some of the IoT home sensors that the Internet helped develop and are now essential in smart homes:

IoT Home Sensors #1 — Motion Sensors

Motion sensors are one of the most essential and familiar IoT home sensors. This is because they are practical and help improve security.

Motion sensors are IoT home sensors that can detect movements. A motion sensor uses a wide range of physical energy to detect motion. Some models use infrared heat, while some models use microwave and ultrasonic signals.

These IoT devices could be used to detect unrecognized movements. Then, it could alert you of the unrecognized movements that it detected.

You can also use a motion sensor to automate smart devices. For instance, some homeowners use them to automatically turn on light bulbs. This is possible by integrating the motion sensors into smart light bulbs. Once the IoT home sensors detect movements, they can send signals to the bulbs to turn on.

IoT Home Sensors #2 — Thermostats

Thermostats are important IoT smart sensors for smart home automation. These devices are essential, especially in smart homes in colder parts of the country.

Thermostats are devices that help you measure the temperature within your home’s indoors. By doing so, it helps you tune your heater to your preferred temperature.

Some models of the thermostats have outstanding accuracy. This lets you tune your heater to the exact temperature that you want. This would save excess energy allowed by inaccurate readings.

Some models of these IoT home sensors also come with an application. This would allow you to heat your place when you are outside. So, you could come to a warm home as you come back from the cold outdoors.

IoT Home Sensors #3 — Smoke Detectors

Residential fires are also a grave concern in the United States. For instance, there are over 1.3 million fires reported in the United States. These fires caused over 3,300 civilian deaths and over US$10 billion in property damage.

These numbers make smoke alarms one of the most important IoT home automation sensors. Safeatlast.co reports that 40% of deaths happen in homes with no smoke alarm. The same source also reports that smoke alarms decrease the risk of dying in a home fire by 50%.

Smoke detectors help you detect smoke as the smoke is usually a clear indicator of a fire breaking out. Once it detects one, it will alert you to have the fire extinguisher.

Some smoke detectors are integrated into sprinklers. Once, they detect smoke, they could send signals to the sprinklers and extinguish the fire with water.

IoT Home Sensors #4 — Heat Detectors

Other IoT home sensors such as heat sensors can also be used to prevent devastating fires from breaking out. Heat detectors detect excessive amounts of heat in the background. Excessive heat can indicate that a fire is breaking out. It detects excessive heat, and then alarms you to alert you of a fire.

Like smoke detectors, heat detectors can also be integrated with sprinklers. So, it could send signals to the sprinklers once it detects excessive heat. A combination of the smoke sensor and heat detector would make a strong pair in preventing fires.

IoT Home Sensors #5 — Carbon Monoxide Detectors

Carbon monoxide is a silent killer. It is odorless and colorless. You would already be poisoned by it even before you know it.

Around 50,000 people in the United States are sent to the emergency room every year due to carbon monoxide poisoning. In addition to this, over 400 people died in the United States due to carbon monoxide poisoning. These numbers are according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Because it is odorless and colorless, there is no way to detect carbon monoxide with the bare senses. For this reason, the carbon monoxide detector is invented. This device alarms when it detects a high concentration of carbon monoxide.

This device is ideal to be placed in the garage. This is because carbon monoxide is usually produced by combustion in cars.
